Will Rosacea Affect My Color Analysis?
Important questions on color analysis and what you should know before you do it.
While on a press trip with Buick, I was introduced to Julia Dobkine, an image consultant and color analyst.
For an accurate color analysis, Julia recommends going in raw. That means no makeup and wearing a white top.
On my first encounter with Julia, I wore makeup, and my color analysis was True Winter. I wondered if covering up my rosacea affected my color analysis. To be safe, I met her makeup-less and wearing a white top the second time around.
The Color Test
The first step of the process is having Julia place swatches over your chest. She taught me how to analyze colors by discussing what fell flat and what shined on my face next to the swatches.
Let’s go through the color swatches and see if we can see the difference.
Ready, set, go!
True Autumn
The first time I looked at my reflection with the swatch on my chest, I thought, Wow, I really can pull off any color. I saw no issue but after studying the swatches on my face for a few minutes I started to pick at those subtle differences.
This swatch made my skin look a little bit more blotchy.
True Spring
At first look I wanted this swatch to be the one I matched with. I love bright colors! But then I noticed how flat it made my eyes look and I knew this wasn’t the one.
Light Summer
I’m not sure how but this swatch made my rosacea pop and my eyes look tired.
True Summer
At this point, most of them started to blend in, but, Julia pointed out how much it muted my natural lip color.
Warm Spring
This swatch made me glad to have Julia and her expert eye help me find my color analysis. I see no issues!
Muted Summer
No offense to my Muted Summer girlies but this one did nothing for me. I noticed my dark circles a lot more. What do you see?
Deep Winter
I think we’re closer but not there just yet.
True Winter
We made it! I am officially a True Winter - rosacea and all!
Once your season is identified, Julia gives you a color cheat book. This booklet carries swatches that help identify the colors that fall under your season. A very helpful tool when shopping!
She also sent me a PDF file with everything I should know as a True Winter. Here is a small sample:
So, did my rosacea affect my color analysis?
To confirm I emailed the question to Julia and her team. This is what they said:
Rosacea or any other skin condition doesn't impact color analysis because the analysis focuses on your skin's undertone rather than its overtone. So, even with rosacea, Julia can accurately determine your color palette. Additionally, people with rosacea can belong to different color seasons because they may have different undertones (warm neutral, or cool.)
Along with recommendations for hair, makeup, and color palette you also receive a recommendation on jewelry tones.
Part of the color analysis is determining what jewelry tones work best.
Gold
As a Bronx baddie, I grew up on gold hoops and slick moves. Sadly, the gold hoops aren’t the most flattering for my skin tone.
Antique Silver
I can’t lie. I look good as hell.
Silver
As a True Winter, I can wear Antique Silver (Gunmetal,) White gold, and platinum.
We are family! Does that mean we all have the same color profile?
When I told my Instagram followers about getting a color analysis, a lot of you had questions. Most of you wanted to know if relatives had the same color profile.
Good question!
Since we all have the same mother and father I concluded we would all be the same color profile.

We decided to run a little experiment and see if siblings would have the same color profile. I got my sisters and cousin to get a color analysis to find out.
Meet my sisters! Catherine and I are only two years apart and until I was 12 my mom dressed us up like creepy twins. I assumed she and I would have the same color profile. Turns out we do! Bridget was next and was identified as a True Winter too! So far my theory has proven right.
Naturally, that had me guessing my older sister, Tatiana, would be part of the True Winter gang.
False.
Tatiana is a Deep Winter! Turns out relatives won’t always have the same color profile.
Since I had Julia around I had to get Manolo and Martina analyzed.
Manolo
Just like Mama, he is a True Winter
Martina
A beautiful Warm Spring.
Was it worth it?
Yes.
However, as someone who has spent over 10 years experimenting with fashion, I know it all comes down to confidence. I love trying trends, color combos, and aesthetics. They don’t always fall under my color ‘spectrum’ but they work because I wear what I like and what makes me feel good. I will be using this color analysis when I don’t feel my best or don’t want to try too hard styling a look. It helps to know that there are colors out there that will make me shine.
